The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

Every year-end has a date attached to it, but that date is rarely the one that matters most. If you are a sole trader, your self-assessment return is due online by 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April. If you run a limited company, your accounts usually go to Companies House nine months after your accounting period ends, with corporation tax payable nine months and one day later. Those are the legal deadlines. The practical deadline is the day you sit down with a complete, tidy set of records — and that should be weeks before anything is filed.
Give yourself a fortnight of unhurried work. Rushing year-end tasks is how small errors creep into a tax return, and those errors are far more expensive to unpick once the return has been submitted.
Reconciliation means matching what your accounting software says happened with what actually happened in the real world. Do this properly and every later task becomes easier; skip it and you will spend the rest of the year chasing a difference of £43.17.
Work through each of these in turn, marking off transactions against statements line by line:
Watch for duplicate payments, personal spending that has slipped through the business account, and supplier refunds you have not yet recorded. Anything left unmatched after a second pass is usually a timing difference or a genuine error, and both are worth resolving now rather than in a panic later.
If you sell physical goods, carry out a physical stock count at your year-end date and write it down on a dated sheet. Value stock at the lower of what it cost you and what it could realistically be sold for. Be honest about anything damaged, out of season or discontinued — writing off dead stock now reduces your profit and your tax bill, and it gives you a clear picture of what is actually selling.
If you sell your time rather than products, your equivalent is work in progress. List any jobs started but not yet invoiced, along with the hours or days committed to them. For many freelancers and consultancies this is one of the largest figures on the balance sheet, and it is easily forgotten.
Pull an aged debtor report and sort it from oldest to newest. Then pick up the phone. Invoicing is not the same as getting paid, and a polite, specific call — "I'm closing off the year's books, can you confirm when invoice 1042 will be settled?" — recovers money that emails never will.
Decide now what is genuinely recoverable and what is not. If a debt has gone bad, writing it off is a legitimate expense that reduces your taxable profit, but it needs to be documented with a note of the attempts you made to collect it. Do not let a slow payer carry over into another year simply because chasing them feels awkward.
This is the section most people leave until the last minute, and it is the one that costs them the most. Go through your records and make sure everything is captured:
Also check your cut-off. An invoice dated a few days before year-end but received afterwards still belongs in the earlier period if the work was done then. Good records make that judgement easy; thin records make it a guess.
Your accountant can only work with what you give them. A well-organised pack saves them time, which saves you money, and it usually speeds up the whole process by weeks. Put together:
Send it early and ask what else they need. Then diarise the same tasks for next year, at the same point in the calendar. Year-end work is never enjoyable, but done a little at a time, well before the deadline, it stops being frightening and starts being useful — a genuine snapshot of how your business is really doing.
